Paphos is a mature and well established area and has been popular with British holidaymakers for years. The city of Paphos on the southwest coast of Cyprus was the capital of the island in Roman times, and dates from 1400 BC.
It has been written in Greek mythology that the city of Paphos is where the Greek Goddess of Love, Aphrodite was born. She rose from the waves at the spot marked by Aphrodite's Rock which is a place of pilgrimage for the Hellenic world. Paphos was also an important city in the time of early Christianity and there are many historical connections, for example a stone pillar near to the Tomb of kings where St Paul was supposed to have been bound and beaten for preaching Christianity. Paphos has survived many foreign invasions and raids over the centuries. Thanks to this historic and archaeological wealth, the whole town of Pafos is on UNESCO's list of World Cultural Heritage Sites. Its importance waned over the last century because the British decided that Larnaca would be the major port and therefore development of this part of the island came to a standstill. The western end of Cyprus was long regarded as a backwater, ignored by locals and tourists alike.
More recently, however, Paphos has undergone a renaissance because of government spending on infrastructure such as roads, dams and airport. This, in turn, has encouraged the tourist industry to invest heavily in the area and the population has risen to about 40,000. The Ktima part of the city is the main residential area but most visitors head for Kato Paphos near the medieval port with lots of bars, tavernas, restaurants and nightclubs which come alive after dark. It is very British and you can taste the local cuisine as well as have a pint of English beer.
The city's new international airport has been built with specific aim of increasing tourism to this part of the island and this will happen over the next few years without spoiling the natural beauty which is evident everywhere you look. This is good news for investors in property in Paphos area as the price of apartments and villas will increase on the back of this development.
